Description

The Whalebone Public House is a historic building located on Fingringhoe Chapel Road. It has been in existence since at least 1735 but underwent refurbishment in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The front of the building features a pebble-dashed ground floor and a rendered first floor adorned with 20th-century pargeted panels. It has a hipped tiled roof with three brick chimneystacks and stands two storeys tall with four windows. The eaves are highlighted by a modillion cornice. The first floor includes four early 19th-century 20-pane sash windows with cambered heads, while the ground floor has one sash window but is primarily fitted with 20th-century metal framed windows and a 20th-century bar extension. The rear elevation is made of painted brick and has two 12-pane sash windows. The left wing features a gable end with a 12-pane sash window. Inside the bar, there is an 18th-century wooden fireplace with a dentilled top, along with two corner china cabinets that have serpentine shelves. One of these cabinets is particularly notable for its elaborate carved diamond-shaped motifs in the side pilasters and mutule frieze.
