Description
North Bridge is a road bridge located in Colchester, built in 1843 during the mayoralty of R R Nunn. A plaque on the west side commemorates its construction, while another plaque on the east side notes the bridge's widening by 17 feet 6 inches, carried out by Henry H Elves, JP, Mayor on 22 October 1903.
The bridge is made of cast iron and rests on a substructure of brown brick laid in Flemish bond. It features three piers with pointed stone cutwaters and three cambered cast iron arches with blank spandrels. Above the arches, there is cast iron balustrading consisting of 11 sections with an arched pattern and buttresses. The bridge has two dividing cast iron piers, and the ends are supported by cemented brick piers topped with tooled stone coping. On the east side, there is an attached flight of stone steps leading to the riverside path, complete with an ornamental footscraper and handrail. The approaches to the bridge are lined with cemented revetments, stone coping, and cast iron railings.
