Description
Dukes Farmhouse is a building dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, constructed of red brick with flared headers and topped with a red plain tile roof. It features a gabled cross wing at the west end and stands two storeys high with attics. The façade has a 1:3 window arrangement, showcasing early 19th century vertical sliding double hung sashes with glazing bars and margin sashes set in gauged arches. The cross wing contains two original windows with five transomed lights and moulded brick jambs and mullions, along with similar single light windows on the west side. A moulded string course adorns the cross wing, while the main range has an early 19th century Tuscan porch with columns and fluted pilasters, flanked by small 19th century windows in gauged arches. There are remains of an early 18th century doorcase with moulded architraves and three hipped dormers. The rear of the building has later extensions.
Inside, the farmhouse retains original moulded beams, doors, and some late 16th century glass featuring a Tudor Rose and the initials ER. There are fine 16th century fireplaces on both the ground and first floors, along with early 17th century panelling and doors with original ironmongery. Early 18th century panelling, moulded cornices, and doors are also present, as well as an early 19th century staircase with stick balusters. The main roof is framed with side purlins. The 16th century wing is a remnant of a larger house that once extended to the west and was originally surrounded by a moat, which has since been filled in.
