Description
Keepers Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 16th century or earlier. It is timber framed and features black weatherboarding and gable thatched roofs. The building is a single storey with attics and has a gable thatched dormer on the east elevation. There is an off-centre red brick stack that has been rebuilt. The windows are generally horizontal sliding sashes or casements with small panes, and there is a canted bay window on the north gable elevation with a hipped peg tile roof. Some old elm weatherboarding can be found on the north end of the west elevation.
Inside, the cottage shows evidence of being a small open hall house with floored ends and a probable crown post roof. There is a large, double-sided inglenook fireplace, one side of which features a stop-chamfered mantel beam from the early 17th century. The cottage was formerly known as the Old Workhouse.
