Description
The barn located immediately northwest of Coptfoldhall Farmhouse dates from the mid to late 18th century. It features walls made of soft red brick and lime mortar arranged in Flemish bond, with corbelled details at the eaves. The roofs are hipped at both ends and over the midstrey, covered with handmade clay peg tiles and half-round clay ridge and hip tiles. There is a lean-to extension to the west of the midstrey that is timber framed on a brick plinth and weatherboarded, with a roof of clay pantiles. Another lean-to extension to the east of the midstrey is constructed of brick and has an asbestos corrugated sheet roof. A lean-to on the east end is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a natural slate roof and half-round clay tiles on the hips. The barn consists of seven bays, with a centrally placed midstrey and lean-to extensions on either side of the south side, as well as a lean-to extension on the east end. The side walls of the barn have a series of splayed vertical openings on the ground floor, originally intended for cross-ventilation, which are now blocked.
Inside, the main roof was originally framed with staggered side purlins and king-post trusses. The purlins are double pegged into the principal rafters, and the pairs of rafters are pegged at the ridge, with lower secondary rafters pegged into the side purlins. The hips are constructed with dragon and cross ties. The roof over the midstrey features staggered side purlins with queen struts to the principal rafters and dragon and cross ties to the hips. The original building has been partially altered, with much of the roof framing removed in five bays on the north side and replaced with a softwood single side purlin and rafter construction. A timber floor on a steel frame has been inserted, and the midstrey has been reduced in height by an inserted weatherboarded panel. An opening in the north wall opposite the midstrey has been reduced in width by later brick infill.
The description of the barn is based on sales particulars from 1828 for the Coptfold Hall Estate, indicating that the lean-to extensions to the east of the midstrey and on the east end were added after 1828.
