Description

The former barn at Fridays Farmhouse dates from around the mid-17th century and was extended in the 18th century. It features a timber-framed structure built on a brick plinth, with lime plastered walls displaying a single zigzag pattern in the pargetted panels. The lower section is weatherboarded, and the roof is covered with corrugated asbestos sheets and has gabled ends.

Originally, the barn consisted of five bays, with a midstrey located in the wider central bay on the north side. An additional bay was added to the west end during the 18th century. The north elevation showcases a large gabled midstrey positioned to the left of centre, featuring plank double doors and weatherboarding above, along with a small doorway to the left. Attached to the east end is a late weatherboarded building with a low lean-to hipped roof clad in pan tiles and a doorway in the gable above.

Inside, the barn retains its original frame, including a large storey post with a slightly jowled head, a large girt wall plate, and side-plate. The close-studding features some straight diagonal bracing that is trenched into the face of the studding. Much of the original wall framing has been reused in the 18th-century west end wall. The roof structure includes curved braces to the tie-beams, except for the 18th-century bay which has curved brackets. The queen-post roof contains tenoned staggered side-purlins, some of which are raised timbers, and lacks a ridgepiece. Most of the common rafters remain, pegged to the purlins, and carpenters' assembly marks can be found on the storey posts. The midstrey roof features cellars and clasped side purlins.
