Description
The stable block at Great Myles, located in Kelvedon Hatch, dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped peg-tiled roof, forming a U-shape over two storeys. The front elevation, which faces southwest, has a window arrangement of 2:3:2, with plain reveals and flat soffits that include voussoirs. The central section of three windows is slightly projected forward, and there is a brick dentilled eaves cornice above.
On the ground floor, there are three doorways set in blind recesses that rise to the same height as the ground-floor window heads. The door recess heads also have voussoirs and flat soffits. All windows are fixed lights, with the two outer ones featuring glazing bars and 4x3 panes. The doors are 20th-century, boarded, and halved for stable use. The first floor has five windows, which are fixed lights with glazing bars and 4x3 panes, along with two casement windows that also have glazing bars and 4x3 panes.
At the top, there is a central octagonal wooden lantern with semicircular arched openings and a cupola. Below it, a square base supports an octagonal clock face on the eastern elevation, although the windows there are now irregular. Inside, the first floor contains enclosed living rooms, and the roof features joggled butt purlins. A sales catalogue from 1830 indicates that this stable block was capable of accommodating 22 horses. The associated mansion was demolished after a fire in 1837.
