Description
Baker's House is a mid-18th century house located on Baker's Lane in Ingatestone. It was renovated and restored in 1973 by builders Harland and Lee. The house is constructed from blue and red bricks in header bond and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The main part of the building faces northwest and consists of two storeys and attics. There is a 20th-century two-storey wing at the rear left, which is plastered and has a roof of machine-made red clay tiles, along with a two-storey lean-to at the rear right.
The front of the house features a four-window range of 20th-century sashes with 6+6 lights, supported by jambs and gauged segmental-flat arches made of red brick. A projecting band of three courses of red bricks runs at first-floor height, and there are red brick quoins at the corners. The house has a moulded brick cornice, a plain parapet, and a half-hipped mansard roof. In the hipped dormers, there are two 20th-century casements.
On the left elevation of the left rear wing, there is a 20th-century glazed door set within a 20th-century doorcase that features fluted pilasters and a dentilled cornice. Each return has a similar sash window on the ground floor, and the attic storey is plastered. The returns also have a raised band similar to the front. All brickwork has been re-pointed with cement mortar. Notably, in the right return, about 4 meters above the ground, there is a brick inscribed with 'I.G. 1745', likely marking a parish boundary.
