Description
Nos. 82 and 84 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 17th century or earlier and was altered in the late 19th century. The building is timber-framed, with a facade of painted brick in English bond, weatherboarded and rendered, and has a roof covered with handmade red clay tiles. The main section faces southeast, with a wing at the rear right and a single-storey lean-to beyond. There is a shorter wing at the rear centre and a larger extension beyond that is roofed with red clay pantiles. Additionally, there are two single-storey lean-to extensions at the rear left, creating an almost rectangular plan.
The building is one storey high with attics. The ground floor features an early 20th-century shopfront with two large windows and two recessed glazed doors. Above this, there are two 19th-century casement windows with eight lights in the brick facade, which has a dogtooth course below the eaves. The left elevation is partly made of 19th-century red brick and partly cement rendered. The rear elevation, above the left rear extensions, is weatherboarded. There is one disused stack at the rear of the pantiled extension.
Inside, the ground floor has been significantly altered for shop use, with all internal studding removed, most beams boxed, and joists ceiled. The first floor of the left part has been raised and the soffit boarded around 1900, resulting in less than a storey height between it and the ceiling above, which features a boxed axial beam. The right part has one exposed axial beam that is chamfered with concealed stops, and another beam in the ceiling above with run-out stops. The rear right wing is ceiled to the rafters and collars of the roof, and there is no access to the roof structure. The building is included for its group value.
