Description
The granary, located 50 metres north-west of Navestock Hall, dates from the 15th or 16th century. It is timber-framed with walling constructed of post and muntin. The roof is hipped and covered with peg tiles, supported by two crown posts and a collar purlin. Inside, two tie-beams divide the space into a central bay and two half-width end bays. Incomplete carpenter's marks on the exterior and redundant joints for rising braces from the crown posts indicate that the building has been shortened at both ends. An inscription on the rear wall plate reads 'J.C. 1788 re-built', which accounts for the unusual shape of the shoulders of the edge halved and bridled scarf joints in the wall plates. The granary features a central doorway with a chamfered frame. Some sills have been partly replaced and rest on staddles made of oolitic stone and brick. The granary and the stable form a group with Navestock Hall.
