Description
The mounting block and obelisk, located 16 metres north-east of the main block of Brentwood School, dates from the 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed from limestone and yellow brick. The structure features three stone steps on the northwest and southeast sides that lead up to a square platform, which is partly made of stone and partly rendered on yellow brick. On this platform sits a plain square stone base that supports four square stone blocks, which in turn hold a stone obelisk. Beneath the platform is a semicircular vault, which is blocked near each end with red brick laid in stretcher bond. At the top of the obelisk is a cast-iron black spread eagle on a ball. This emblem, derived from the arms of Sicily, was granted in 1511 by King Ferdinand of Aragon to Wystan Browne, the father of Sir Antony Browne, who founded Brentwood School.
