Description

The enclosed garden wall, located 47 meters east of Middleton Hall, dates from the 18th century. It is constructed of red brick, primarily featuring stone coping, and encloses a rectangular area with the southern end wall set at an angle, running northwest to southeast. The garden measures 40 meters wide by about 75 meters long. The long northern, southern, and eastern walls include angled 'crinkle-crankle' bays that are 4.3 meters wide, with bay walls measuring 2.5 meters long. Each wall has straight sections where they meet at the corners, with the northern and southern walls consisting of 7 bays, while the eastern wall has 14 bays. The northern, western, and eastern walls are built in English bond, with the western wall being straight and featuring two principal entrances with gate piers, as well as a simple entrance with a wooden doorway frame at the northern end. Approximately 15 meters from the northern end, there is a straight joint where the northern section maintains English bond while the southern section transitions to Flemish bond with some burnt headers, continuing to a gate pier. Additionally, the northern section of the western wall has gabled brick coping. Later alterations include a cement block shed situated between the western gateways and a doorway to changing rooms built against the outer face of the eastern wall. A second doorway to the north has a rebuilt arched head. Within the enclosed garden, there is a central ridge beneath the grass running north-south, and a 20th-century swimming pool is located in the northeastern corner. The garden wall, along with the wall and railings to the west and Middleton Hall, forms a cohesive group.
