Description
This ancillary building, located 8 metres north of Danes Vale Farmhouse, is likely a former byre that has been converted into stables. It dates from the early 16th century and is constructed with a timber frame, weatherboarded exterior, and a roof made of handmade glazed red pantiles and red clay corrugated tiles. The building features three bays facing southeast and has a rear extension with a catslide roof. There is a small 20th-century lean-to extension with a corrugated iron roof at the left end, and a 20th-century open canopy made of corrugated asbestos supported by posts at the front. It is a single storey with attics and includes three halved stable doors. The structure has jowled posts, heavy studding, and some wattle and daub infill in the rear wall, along with a crownpost roof that has axial bracing. A 20th-century floor has been inserted. The left and middle bays show signs of light smoke-blackening on the roof timbers, which may suggest that it was previously used as a smithy or bakehouse, although it might also have served as a dwelling at some point.
