Description
This structure is a cartlodge with a granary above, located approximately 90 metres west-north-west of Terling Hall Farmhouse. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and is timber framed, made from re-used timber from the 15th and 16th centuries. The building is weatherboarded and was originally roofed with handmade red clay tiles, although it was only covered with tarpaulins at the time of the survey in January 1985.
The cartlodge features seven bays facing south, with the middle bay providing through access and a loading facility, while the other bays are open at the front. There is a lean-to extension forming an aisle at the rear and a two-bay 19th-century extension to the right, which is enclosed. The building has two storeys and includes chamfered axial beams, chamfered binding beams with step stops, and plain joists of horizontal section, along with original floorboards. It has arched braces, mostly replaced by bolted knees, and displays a good series of chisel-cut carpenters' assembly marks. The roof is a clasped purlin design without wind bracing and is half-hipped.
