Description
The wall surrounding the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Bocking dates back to the 16th century, with repairs made in the 17th century and later. It is constructed from flint rubble, which has been patched with bricks from various periods. The wall features an embattled design and has moulded stone copings. Near the northwest end, there are remnants of an opening. The northern section of the wall is made of 17th-century brick resting on a flint rubble base.
The Church of St Mary in Bocking is a significant 14th-century wool church that underwent considerable work in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, which may be connected to the construction of this wall. The wall is recognized as a Grade II* listed structure due to its importance as a well-preserved example of a 16th-century churchyard wall, which has been extensively restored in the 17th century and beyond.
