Description

House, dating from the 18th century, with alterations in the early 19th century and late 20th century. The house is timber-framed and plastered, with a roof of handmade red plain tiles. It has a main range facing northeast, and a long rear extension that creates an irregular T-shaped plan. The house has two storeys. The ground floor has two early 19th century sash windows. The first floor features two similar sashes, plus a 20th century splayed oriel window. The oriel window has an 18th century sash window with eight and eight lights, and four fixed lights on either side, supported by scrolled brackets. A 20th century door is set within an early 19th century doorcase with fluted detailing, and has a 20th century side-light under a joint canopy. A vehicle entry is located at the left end, featuring a semi-elliptical arch and double doors. The rear wing is weatherboarded. The interior was significantly altered in the late 20th century. A photograph from around 1865, reproduced in B.L. Kentish’s Kelvedon and its Antiquities (1974), shows the house obliquely; at that time it did not have an oriel window, and it had two sashes in the right return.
