Description

Herkstead Green Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in handmade red clay tiles. The building features a mid-16th century three-bay crosswing aligned approximately north-south, alongside a 17th century three-bay range to the west, creating an L-shaped plan. There is a 17th century lean-to stair tower in the southwest corner and an axial chimney stack at the junction, also from the 17th century. The farmhouse is two storeys high.

At the time of survey in October 1983, the building was undergoing renovation, and there were no doors or windows fitted. It has jowled posts and heavy studding. The crosswing includes additional jowls at the first floor level, plain-chamfered binding and bridging beams with step stops, joists that are horizontally sectioned, and curved tension braces set inside the studs. There are short arched braces to one inner tiebeam. The east wall features a face-halved scarf joint at one end and housed at the other, along with an unglazed window containing three diamond mullions. The roof of the crosswing is constructed with clasped purlins, high collars, and curved wind bracing.

The east-west range has reused studs in the walls and some reused smoke-blackened rafters, likely replacing an open hall that once stood on the same site. The axial beams in this range are plain-chamfered with die-away stops, and both wallplates have face-halved and bladed scarfs. The roof here is also of clasped purlin construction but lacks wind bracing. The chimney stack features a large wood-burning hearth to the west and a smaller hearth with rounded rear angles to the east.
