Description

This is a row of five pairs of houses, located on Church Street in Bocking. They were built in 1872 of red brick with grey gault brick dressings, and have red plain tile roofs with crested ridge tiles. The houses are two storeys high and feature two gables to each pair. Each gable is topped with decorative bargeboards which incorporate ball pendants and wrought iron finials. Each pair has a four-window range, with the windows being 2- and 3-light iron casements featuring mullions and decorative glazing bars. Stone plaques are affixed to each gable, bearing a sunk quatrefoil and the inscription 'AD 1872'. The houses were commissioned by Samuel Courtauld as high-quality housing to support his Bocking Weaving Mills and form part of the 19th-century Courtauld development in north-central Essex, centered on Bocking and Halstead.
