Description
This is an early 16th-century aisled barn located approximately 30 metres south-southeast of Latchleys Farmhouse. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof covered in corrugated asbestos. The barn has five bays aligned north-south, with the main entrance originally located to the west of the middle bay, which is now blocked. It is adjacent to a smaller 17th-century barn to the north.
The structure features jowled posts, arched braces connecting to cambered tiebeams and arcade plates, and raking shores beneath the aisle ties to the sills. Curved braces are trenched inside the heavy studding, which was originally filled with wattle and daub but has since been replaced. The arcade plates show edge halved and bridled scarfs, as well as face-halved scarfs that are bladed at one end and housed at the other in the wallplates. The variety of scarf types used in the building is notable, as it reflects the combination of older, well-proven techniques in areas of high stress and newer, more experimental methods in more stable sections. The main span roof has been rebuilt to a lower pitch to accommodate the asbestos cladding.
