Description
Two war memorials were erected around 1920, dedicated to two British pilots who died in service at this location during the First World War.
The memorial to Captain Henry Clifford Stroud features a rusticated granite plinth bearing a low-relief inscription on its front (south) elevation: THIS SPOT IS SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF / CAPT HENRY CLIFFORD STROUD, NRE AND RFC / KILLED IN ACTION AT MIDNIGHT / 7TH MARCH 1918 / FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH. A two-blade propeller is mounted on a detached metal post positioned directly behind the plinth. Six square-plan stone markers are laid out around the plinth in a rectangular arrangement extending south. The memorial is enclosed by six square-plan timber posts, likely erected in the late 20th century, and a plain metal railing that runs along the west, north, and east sides; these timber posts and railings are not of special architectural or historic interest. The memorial to Captain Stroud stands approximately 30 metres west of the A130 road and 170 metres north of Monument Bridge, both of which were constructed between 2002 and 2003.
The memorial to Captain Alexander Bruce Kynoch also has a rusticated granite plinth, inscribed on its east elevation: SACRED TO THE MEMORY / OF / CAPT ALEXANDER BRUCE KYNOCK RAF / WHO WAS KILLED IN ACTION / HERE ON THE NIGHT OF / MARCH 7TH 1918 / AGED 24 YEARS. The plinth is surrounded by kerb stones arranged in a rectangular pattern extending east of the plinth, measuring roughly 1.8 metres by 1 metre. These kerb stones are bounded by six reinforced-concrete posts, linked by a low metal rail, most likely added in the mid or late 20th century, and measuring approximately 2 metres by 1.2 metres. The six concrete posts and rail are not of special architectural or historic interest. The memorial to Captain Kynoch stands approximately 250 metres west of the memorial to Captain Stroud and 40 metres north of the Shenfield to Southend line of the Great Eastern Main Line.
