Description
Church Cottages is a pair of cottages, possibly originally one, dating from the 16th century or earlier. They are constructed with a timber frame and plaster, topped with a thatched roof. A 20th-century plastered chimney stack has replaced an earlier 17th-century stack that featured grouped shafts. The cottages are one storey with an attic and have a lobby entry plan. There are two boarded doors, with the right-hand door being a later addition. The ground floor has four casement and fixed-light windows. Below the dormer windows, there are two terracotta plaques inscribed with 'Cambridge Cottage Improvement Society'. Inside the right-hand cottage, there is a mid-16th-century roll-moulded axial beam and joists in the main room, while the end room has square-sectioned joists. The hearth is sealed, and there is a cellar beneath the main room with external access at the rear. The cottage was once a beer house.
