Description

Manor Farmhouse is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating back to the 16th century and earlier, with additions and alterations from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed from timber framing and rendered, with painted brick, and features a rebuilt ridge stack and a side stack. The roofs are plain tiled. The building has two storeys and a cellar. The main range, which is from the late 16th century, has been partly demolished to the south-west and includes a cross wing to the north-east that incorporates the timber frame of an earlier structure. The cross wing has solid curved braces supporting an exposed jetty, along with a 19th-century bay window. The main range has been extended to the north-west at ground floor level, with the entrance retained in a cross passage position. There is a 19th-century panelled door with a patterned rectangular fanlight. On the ground floor, there is one casement window to the right and two similar casement windows on the first floor.

Inside, the exposed timber frame reveals the earlier structure in the south-east and south-west walls, along with a blocked internal doorway featuring roll-moulded jambs and a four-centred arched head, as well as stop-chamfered ceiling beams. The original hearth in the hall is partly lined, and there is a 18th-century chimney piece in the north-east room. The cellar is lined with brick and flint rubble and includes an ice closet. During renovations, the foundations were exposed and may still exist in the bakehouse to the south-west of an earlier building. The farmhouse was part of the Upperhall estate and may be located on the site of the manor house, which was one of two manors in Hildersham.
