Description
Girton College is a college designed by Alfred Waterhouse, built in 1873 with additions made in 1876, 1883, and 1886. The college features red brick in English bond with black mortar courses, and terracotta details around the windows, doorways, and eaves. It has steeply pitched roofs covered in patterned tiles, topped with crested ridge tiles and tall ridge stacks. The original layout consists of sets of rooms accessed by corridors, all designed in the Neo-Tudor style. The building is two storeys high with attics, and it has pointed arches above hung sashes with plate glass set in segmental heads.
A notable feature is the five-stage gatehouse tower built in 1886-1887, which has a parapet and a vaulted carriageway entry. In 1891, Paul Waterhouse, Alfred's son, joined the architectural partnership. Cloister Court, which includes the dining hall, chapel, and part of Woodlands Court, was constructed between 1900 and 1902 in a similar style. The remainder of Woodlands Court and the library were completed in 1931-1932 by Michael Waterhouse, the grandson, with Sir Giles Gilbert Scott serving as a consultant. This later work used paler red brick in English bond, with steeply pitched tiled roofs, stone surrounds, and four-centred arches over casements and doorways.
Inside, the dining hall features a hammer-beam roof with original light fittings, while the library has a king-post construction roof with arch bracing supporting the tie beams.
