Description

Charnock House, located at No. 30 on Church Street in Gamlingay, is a house dating from around 1700 and the late 18th century. It features red brick in Flemish bond with some patterned brickwork, a plain tiled roof, and a wood modillion eaves cornice that wraps around the west gable end, partially covering the kneeler of the circa 1700 end parapet. The west end has a stack with two flues and recessed panels on each side. The asymmetrical facade reflects its two main building periods, showcasing a seven-window range of recessed hung sashes from the 19th century at the first floor, complete with a moulded plat band. The off-centre doorway consists of a six-panelled door topped with a rectangular fanlight and glazing bars. The west end displays the dark red brickwork from around 1700, with clear red rusticated brick surrounds around the window and door openings, while the remainder of the house is constructed of lighter red brick, likely from the 19th century. At the rear, there is an original kitchen wing that is timber framed and has a casing of red brick from around 1700. The range facing the road was enlarged at the rear around 1874. The interior was remodeled in the 19th century, featuring an open string staircase with stick balusters, turned newels, and tread ends adorned with scroll and heart designs on the cheek pieces. One room includes a white marble fireplace flanked by a detached shaft with decorative bosses on the capitals featuring a shell motif.
