Description
A group of thirteen chest tombs and obelisks, accompanied by nineteen tomb stones, dating to the 19th century. They flank a churchyard path leading to the United Reformed Church, situated on the south-east and north-west sides of the churchyard. The distances are measured in feet from the north-west wall of the chapel.
Details of the tombs are as follows: Approximately nine feet from the wall, an obelisk of limestone features a draped urn on a pedestal with a moulded base and inscription to Mary, wife of Joseph Garrett, dated 1861. Fourteen feet away is a limestone chest tomb with a moulded plinth, fluted quoins, and inscribed panels commemorating John Stevenson Blackman (1834) and others. Nineteen feet away, an obelisk of limestone has a square plan with diagonal buttresses and a stepped cap, with an inscription in a foiled panel to Jane Ward (1863). A chest tomb, twenty-four feet from the wall, features a limestone construction with a moulded plinth, fluted quoins, and panels inscribed to Thomas Gayfen (1881). Thirty-one feet away is an obelisk of limestone with a square plan, angle buttresses, a stepped cap and a finial, and inscriptions in a foiled panel, including a dedication to John Wilkinson of Hadstock Hall (1876). Forty-eight feet away is a limestone chest tomb with a moulded plinth, fluted quoins, and panels inscribed to William Foster (1842) and others. A limestone chest tomb, located at sixty-two feet, features a moulded plinth, fluted quoins, and panels inscribed to Joseph Stallbrass (1852) and others. Sixty-two feet from the wall, an obelisk of limestone is square with a needle on a pedestal with a stepped base, with inscriptions on raised panels commemorating William Hales (1871) and others. Sixty-seven feet away is a limestone chest tomb with a moulded plinth, fluted quoins, and panels inscribed to William Dweey (1887) and others.
On the north-west side, nineteen feet away is a chest tomb constructed of limestone and marble, with a moulded plinth, fluted quoins, and oval marble panels inscribed to John Kidman (1828) and others. Twenty-four feet away is a limestone chest tomb on a moulded plinth with fluted quoins and panels inscribed to Daniel Taylor (1827) and others. Thirty-five feet away is a limestone chest tomb with a moulded plinth, fluted quoins and panels inscribed to Buck Smoothy of Hadstock (1835) and others. Finally, forty feet away is a limestone chest tomb on a moulded plinth with fluted quoins and panels inscribed to George Nichols (1831) and others.
