Description

Bassetts is a Grade II* farmhouse, now a house, dating from the mid-16th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring half-hipped and gabled plain tiled roofs. It has two storeys and a three-unit plan consisting of four timber-framed bays that are jettied on both long sides. In the late 16th and 17th centuries, two gabled extensions with a shared internal wall were added.

The west elevation showcases exposed jetty joists with solid curved braces at each bay, and the right-hand gabled extension has folded leaf and vine carved decoration on the facias. The main entrance is located to the left of the centre and features a plank door set in a segmental-headed arch. There are four ground floor windows of various sizes and five first floor windows, including four horizontal sliding sashes.

Inside, the substantial timber frame is exposed, with double ogee-moulded ceiling beams in the hall and folded leaf designs on the beams in the south room. A large fireplace with a mantel beam and niches is present, along with a smaller fireplace in the south room. The staircase, possibly from the early 17th century, has a 16th-century door at its top. There is also evidence of original shuttered diamond mullioned windows and a crown post roof. The farmhouse may have originally been unheated and was possibly built as a guildhall or wool hall facing the green.
