Description

The Parish Church of St Peter is a parish church located on Church Lane in Papworth Everard. The chancel walls and nave, including the buttresses, date back to the 13th century, while the east wall of the chancel and the west bay of the nave were possibly rebuilt in the 17th century using medieval materials. The west tower was demolished after a severe storm in 1741. Restoration took place in 1850, funded by W.H. Cheere, with the tower being rebuilt in 1871 and a spire added in 1877, which was later demolished in 1963. The church features plain tile roofs with stone copings on the parapets, topped with cross finials. The walls are constructed of field stones with limestone dressings.

The north elevation includes a tower with three stages, featuring a main entrance with a two-centred arch, shafted jambs, and bell capitals similar to those found in the chancel arch. The tower has an embattled parapet, a two-light belfry window, and one lancet-light. The nave has three windows with two trefoiled lights and a quatrefoil in two-centred arches, while the chancel has two windows with single trefoiled lights. A gabled south porch and an organ loft project from the south elevation.

Inside, there is a 13th-century font. The church contains several monuments, including a wall monument to Charles Madryll Cheere from 1825, designed in a neo-Greek style by Gaffin of London, as well as floor tiles from around 1850 that have inscriptions on the risers leading to the chancel steps. A chancel screen was added around 1920.
