Description
South Farmhouse is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, built in the late 17th century with alterations and an extension around 1800, and renovated and partially rebuilt in the 20th century. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, featuring hipped slated roofs. It has two ridge stacks made of local red brick and a gault brick end stack, along with a gault brick plinth. The house is two storeys high with an attic and is arranged in an L-plan. The original late 17th-century building was altered when the roof was raised on the main elevations around 1800 and was divided into labourer's cottages in the late 19th century. Recently, it has been extended by two bays to the southeast, replacing a 19th-century brewhouse.
On the northeast elevation, there is a six-panelled door with a plain Doric doorcase, four flush-framed sixteen-paned hung sash windows, and five similar but larger windows on the first floor. Inside, the farmhouse features exposed timber frame and floor frames with chamfered beams, along with three open hearths, one of which has a pair of niches with shaped heads. There are also details from the 19th and 20th centuries.
