Description
Chishill Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the early 16th century, with additions and alterations made in the late 17th or early 18th century. The building is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. It has one storey and an attic, featuring a rectangular red brick ridge stack and an end stack on the left side. A 20th-century porch has been added at the original lobby entry position.
There are six windows on the ground floor, which include two horizontal sliding sashes and one 18th-century three-light iron casement window with leaded lights. A garden door is located on the left side. The cottage has two dormer windows. Originally designed with a three-unit plan, it includes an open hall made up of two timber-framed bays and a collar-rafter roof. The structure was extended by two units on the left and one on the right in the late 17th century, with inserted and replacement floors in the original building.
Inside, there is an inserted stack in the hall with two hearths, each featuring ingle nooks and shaped heads to two niches. The kitchen hearth is located in the end room, which has a blocked opening for a baking oven. The ceiling beams are chamfered.
