Description
Birds Farmhouse is a cottage dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 17th century. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, with part brick underbuild, and is topped with longstraw thatch, characterized by half-hipped gable ends and a rebuilt ridge stack. The building has a single range plan consisting of four bays and is one storey high with an attic, possibly with a jettied east end. It includes three dormers and has 20th-century windows.
Inside, the original layout includes a two-bay open hall with floored ends. A floor and stack were added in the 16th and 17th centuries. The exposed framing showcases chamfered and boxed tiebeams, as well as chamfered principal posts. The roof is wind-braced with side purlins and sooted rafters above the hall, and there are some mortices indicating the presence of a louvre. The inserted main beam in the former open hall features double ovolo moulding.
