Description
Haylocks is a cottage located on the northeast side of High Street in West Wratting. It has origins dating from the mid to late 17th century and underwent renovations in the mid to late 20th century. The cottage is timber framed, rendered, and features a half-hipped roof covered with reed thatch. It has a ridge stack with grouped shafts set diagonally, which may have had its upper courses rebuilt. The building faces the road and consists of three bays. The lobby entry was blocked in the 18th century when a bread oven was inserted, but it has since been restored. The cottage is one storey with an attic, and the east front includes three large modern dormers, with ground floor windows that are also modern. There is a range to the west that is likely from the same period, also timber framed, rendered, and thatched with reed, featuring an end stack made of red brick. This range has two small pane casements from the 19th century in its south wall. Inside, the cottage retains mid to late 17th-century inglenook hearths with salt and spice ledges, although some timber framing has been obscured or removed, with a few rafters still visible. The range to the west has visible end wall framing and an inglenook hearth.
