Description

Nos. 38 and 40 on Apthorpe Street are 18th-century cottages that were subdivided in the early 19th century when a range was added at the rear, and they now function as two separate dwelling houses. The cottages are timber framed on a brick plinth, rendered, and topped with a thatched roof made of long straw, featuring a grey brick ridge stack. The building has a three-bay plan, which may have been remodeled, as the entrance is now located at the right-hand end bay. There are three dormers and four windows, with 20th-century fenestration, including two horizontal sliding sashes that may date back to the 19th century. Inside, the framing consists of slender scantling, and there is a sealed inglenook hearth in No. 38.
