Description
The Almshouses and The School House are three dwellings that were formerly a school and six almshouses, built in 1732. An inscribed stone plaque reads, "THIS SCHOOL AND HOSPITAL WERE ERECTED AND ENDOW'D BY THE MUNIFICENCE OF MRS JUDITH BENNET DAUGHTER OF Sr LEVINUS BENNET BARc AND AUGMENTED BY LIBERALITY OF JAMES BUSH ESQre AND LEVINUS BUSH ESQre HIS SON ANNO Dmi ; 1732". The school operated until 1959, and the almshouses were converted into four dwellings in 1959-60.
The buildings feature walls of red brick laid in header bond with gauged brick dressings and plain tiled roofs. The symmetrical design includes a two-storey central block with a pediment and single-storey wings. Each wing originally contained three one-roomed houses, which have now been converted into two. The main entrance facade has a central block with side stacks, a moulded wooden eaves cornice, and decorative elements on the pediment. There is a gauged brick band between the floors and gauged brick arches over the windows. The wooden doorcase has a shallow hood supported by shaped brackets, and there is a four-flush-panelled door with a stone plaque above. The ground floor features two and the first floor has three 20th-century casement windows in the original openings. The wings have end stacks, parapet gables, and ridge stacks. The original entrances have been altered to two, featuring half-glazed doors with rectangular fanlights in each wing, along with one original casement window with small panes and two 20th-century casement windows.
