Description
This building is a cottage located at 1 The Green, dating back to 1570, originally constructed for William Yewell. An extension was added to the west in 1678 for John and Mary Rayner, and further alterations were made to the east end around 1977. The structure is timber framed, with restored plaster rendering and a steeply pitched roof that was originally thatched but is now covered with pantiles. It features a brick ridge stack with three linked octagonal shafts that have been rebuilt. The cottage is one storey with an attic and has five modern small casement windows on either side of the doorway leading to a lobby entry. The 1678 bay is two storeys high and has four small casement windows on the front wall. Inside, the original 1570 dwelling consists of two bays with inserted framing, exposing the ceiling and wall frame. There are red brick inglenook hearths with chamfered jambs, and an original newel staircase located on the south side of the stack. The 1678 bay includes a plaster overmantel above a small parlour hearth, featuring a shaped rear wall and the initials J.M.R. along with the date 1678. The main beam is stop chamfered.
