Description

Concordia House is a house dating from around 1720 and the late 18th century, located on the north side of The Common in West Wratting. The building is constructed of red brick, with some burnt bricks in the end walls and tuck-pointed mortar courses. The rear wall is framed and rendered, and part of the front wall conceals some framing from an earlier house. The roof is tiled and has parapets with tumbled ends on kneelers and flush end stacks. Originally designed in an L-plan, the house has two storeys and an attic, featuring two dormers on the front.

The main cornice is moulded and sits above a range of five late 18th to early 19th century twelve-pane recessed hung sash windows. The central doorway is framed by a doorcase with fluted pilasters, an entablature, and a dentilled frieze. The door itself is a bivalve design with six raised, fielded, and beaded panels, topped with a transom light featuring cast iron radial glazing bars. There is a blocked back stairlight window opening in the east wall.

Inside, the house boasts late 18th century fireplaces in two ground floor rooms, each with flanking niches that have arched heads and shaped shelving. The niches in the southeast room are early 18th century, featuring raised key blocks with arches. There are also two additional 18th century fireplaces on the first floor. A two-flight return staircase with winders rises through two storeys from the back of the hall, featuring stick balusters and an octagonal stem newel post that supports a roll rail with a wreathed foot. The staircase includes a bullnose step, cornice tread ends, and profiled cheek pieces.
