Description

Chestnut View is a cottage dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with alterations and an addition from the 17th century, as well as remodelling and enlargement in the late 19th century. It was formerly the village shop. The building is timber framed, with parts that are plaster rendered, but it is mainly encased or rebuilt in white brick from the late 19th to early 20th century. It features a steeply pitched plain tiled roof with a ridge stack. The plan consists of a single range with a two-bay open hall, a service end, and a parlour, oriented with the gable end facing the road. The cottage is one storey with an attic.

On the south side, there are three gable dormers and three windows, all from the 20th century, along with a doorway that leads to the original cross-passage; the entry is now located in the 19th-century wing. Inside, the chimney stack and floor were added to the two-bay open hall around 1630. The partition wall between the hall and the cross-passage, dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, features substantial framing with curved downward bracing. A cellar was built under the service bay, accessible via a staircase in the cross-passage. The original service room beyond the cross-passage retains its unmoulded joists of large scantling laid flat. The roof is constructed with clasped side purlins, collars between the principals, and paired, curved wind braces connecting the principals to the purlins. The roof over the two bays of the hall shows signs of smoke blackening.
