Description
The gatehouse, located approximately 65 meters to the north-west of Down Hall, dates from the early 16th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered infill, topped with a plain tiled roof that features an octagonal lantern. The building has two storeys and jetties on the first floor on two sides. It consists of two bays, with a cartway and a pedestrian entrance situated in the south-west bay. The substantial timber frame is close-studded and includes curved tension braces in each bay. The jetty joists are bullnosed, and there are solid curved braces supporting the posts. The doorway and cartway have curved chamfered braces that create a 'Caernavon' arched head. On the first floor, there are two pairs of three-light mullioned windows. The interior retains many original details, including screen partitions between openings. The roof features a crown-post structure, with a crown-post over the central truss that is braced in two directions to the collars and collar purlins. The gatehouse is set within the moated site of Down Hall.
