Description
Down Hall is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the 16th century with additions from the 17th and 18th centuries, and alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with some parts covered in late 19th century gault brick. It has plain tiled roofs and three stacks at the rear. The house is two storeys tall and has an L-shaped plan, with a recently extended rear kitchen and service rooms.
On the north-west elevation, there is a four-panelled door located to the right of centre, which is sheltered by an open trellised porch. The ground floor features four hung sash windows, while the first floor has five horizontal sliding sash windows or casement windows. Inside, the house was refitted in the 18th century and includes a rear brick chimney with a guarderobe projection in the main range. The house, along with its barns and gatehouse, is set within a moated site.
