Description

No. 51 High Street, formerly known as Conygarth, is a 17th-century building featuring a timber-framed and plastered cross-wing that stands two storeys high with attics. This cross-wing is located to the south of a late 17th-century main range, which is also plastered and timber-framed, and has a tumbled brick parapetted gable and an end stack to the north. In 1735, a dated plaque indicates that an external brick chimney with two flues was added to the cross-wing, flanking windows at both floor levels. To the west of the 17th-century range is an 18th-century addition, which is two storeys tall, made of red brick, featuring a parapet gable, an end stack, and a central ridge stack. The roofs are plain tiled.

The street facade includes a 19th-century oval window in the attic of the cross-wing, along with four boxed hung sash windows with glazing bars on both the first and ground floors. The central entrance features an 18th-century six-panelled door with a moulded wooden architrave and a bracketed triangular pediment. The rear facade has a 17th-century studded oak door and two original 18th-century iron casements with leaded quarries. Inside, the building contains an 18th-century staircase, panelled doors, and a panelled room, along with stop-chamfered ceiling beams.
