Description

Kates Cabin is a farmhouse that was formerly an inn, dated 1819 according to a plaque. It features painted brick construction with roofs made of Collyweston stone slates and Welsh slates. The building has two ridge stacks on both the front and rear ranges, as well as a gable end stack on the right side, all made of gault brick with stepped cornices, two of which have divided stacks.

The structure is two storeys high with a double pile plan and a front range that has three bays extended to the north. There is a panelled door located to the left of centre, which is sheltered by a flat canopy supported by shaped brackets. On either side of the door, there are two niches with rounded heads and a recessed boot scraper. Above the door is a lozenge-shaped plaque with scalloped decoration, inscribed with 'IW, 1819' in black paint.

To the left of the entrance is a large square bay window, while to the right are one recessed hung sash window and one casement window, both topped with cambered brick arches. The extension has a boarded door. On the first floor, there are three recessed hung sash windows, also with cambered brick arches. The building is finished with a sawtooth brick eaves cornice.

Kates Cabin was formerly known as The Dryden's Head Inn and is reputed to have had an inn sign featuring the poet's head, painted by Bearley.
