Description

The estate workshops, built around the early to mid-19th century, stand approximately 10 metres north of number 15 Overend, in Elton. Originally part of an iron foundry commissioned by James Hayes, the workshops are constructed from coursed limestone rubble with 19th-century brick dressings and freestone details. They have Welsh slate roofs. The main range is a two-storey building of five bays, accompanied by a single-storey gable addition to the west, a two-storey recessed addition to the east, and rear outshuts. A large brick stack, reduced below the eaves, is located on the west gable end, while a ridge stack is present on the west extension. The main range features four ground-floor cast iron windows with small panes and five similar first-floor windows, each set within stone lintels. A segmental stone arch with a keystone frames a double boarded entrance door, hung with intricately cast iron hinges, one depicting a hand holding a heart. The west extension contains two boarded doors and two cast iron windows set within segmental brick arches.

Attached to the west gable wall of the west range, facing the parish church and Elton's war memorial, is a Calvary-style memorial. Constructed around 1917 and initially located at Rectory Farm, it was moved to its current position when the farm was sold. The memorial is primarily dedicated to Joscelyn, Baroness Lewal, a member of the Proby family and estate owner, who died on 13 June 1917, aged 29. However, upon erection, the family decided to include references to all villagers who had served and died in the war. Inscriptions read: "ALL YE WHO PASS BY REMEMBER BEFORE GOD THE MEN WHO HAVE GONE FORTH FROM THIS PLACE TO SERVE THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR", and "WHOSOEVER WILL SAVE HIS LIFE SHALL LOSE IT/ WHOSOEVER WILL LOSE HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE THE SAME SHALL FIND IT”. A small wooden plaque beneath the Christ figure is inscribed: "O SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD, WHO/ BY THY DEATH AND PRECIOUS BLOOD HAST REDEEMED US./ SAVE THEM AND HELP THEM/ WE HUMBLY BESEECH THEE/ O LORD”. A decorative wooden plaque directly below the Christ figure lists: “TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND TO THE DEAR MEMORY OF/ JOSCELYN BARONESS LEWAL/ WHO DIED AT PA [DAMAGED] ON 13TH JUNE 1917/ AGED 29 YEARS/ SHE WAS READY”.
