Description

Hardwicke Farmhouse is an early 17th century farmhouse located on a moated site. The building features a hall with a crosswing to the north and a mid to late 19th century range to the south. It is timber framed with modern render and has a modern tile roof, along with a repaired red brick stack at the junction of the hall and crosswing. Both the hall and crosswing are two storeys high and have modern windows and entries. The south range, dating from the mid to late 19th century, is constructed of gault brick and has a plain tile roof, featuring a three-window range of recessed hung sashes and a central doorway.

Inside, the hall range consists of three bays, including a narrower fire-bay. It has a large inglenook made of reused limestone rubble and soft red brick, with a moulded main beam and middle rails that form a cornice. The crosswing also has three bays, with chamfered and stopped tie beams and a side purlin roof supported by long, straight wind bracing. Approximately fifteen yards northwest of the house, there are limestone fragments that were once part of the floor of the crosswing. These fragments date from the mid 12th century and include a scalloped capital and moulded base, likely originating from a 12th century chapel on the site that was demolished around 1600.
