Description

No. 12 Middle Street is a house dated '1690 RM' on a stone plaque above the door, with later 19th and 20th-century additions. It is constructed of coursed limestone, featuring a dressed limestone band above the windows and doorway, as well as a raised band between the floors. The roof is covered with Collyweston stone slates. The building has two storeys with attics and a rear outshut, presenting five slightly irregular symmetrical bays. The gables have parapets with end stacks; there is one shaft on the left and two shafts on the right made of ashlar limestone, along with a moulded wooden eaves cornice.

On the ground floor, there are three cross-framed casement windows with large leaded lights, and one blocked window to the left of the doorway, which features a 19th-century panelled door and a rectangular fanlight. The first floor has five windows similar to those on the ground floor, and there are three gabled dormer windows. A sundial, dated 'RG MDCCXX VII', is painted with Roman numerals and a gnome.

Inside, the original plan has been altered to accommodate a fine 17th-century closed string staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail; the ground floor window was blocked during this alteration. There are also some late 17th-century bolection moulded panelled doors and 19th-century details.
