Description

The Old Rectory is a building that mainly dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, although it incorporates two bays from an early 17th century red brick house. The 17th century section has a tiled roof and is two storeys high, having been refronted in gault brick around 1830. It features a two-storey splayed bay and two windows with drip moulds. There is a late 18th century addition to the south, constructed of local red brick with an early 19th century stucco facade. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with slate, with end stacks. The building has two storeys and attics, with a band between the floors and a range of four recessed hung sashes with glazing bars. The ground floor includes a later gabled porch and a canted bay. An early 19th century addition to the west has a low pitched, hipped slate roof and two ground floor recessed hung sashes with shaped pelmets.

Inside, the 17th century part of the house has two inglenook fireplaces, and the floor framing is visible in one of the ground floor rooms. The 19th century addition features a top-lit hall with a cantilevered staircase, and a back staircase was inserted into the late 18th century range. There are early 19th century fireplaces and panelled shutters throughout. Notably, John Dunton, an author, publisher, and bookseller, was born here.
