Description
No. 2 The Crescent is a terrace house built around 1793, part of two linked terraces that share a common pedimented facade dated 1808. It is located near the Wesleyan Chapel, constructed in 1803 by Joseph Medworth, as part of the planned circus of the Castle Estate. The house is made of local brown brick with a slate roof and a side stack. It stands three storeys high with a basement and features two bays. The stone-coped parapet has painted stone bands at the first and second floors.
On the second floor, there are two recessed, twelve-paned hung sash windows set in cambered gauged red brick arches with stone cills. The first floor has two similar but larger windows, and there is one window on the ground floor. The entrance, located to the left of centre, consists of two stone steps leading to a six-panelled door with a plain fanlight, all within a double recessed red gauged brick arch.
Inside, the house boasts a good open-string staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail, along with original panelled doors. There is also an original entrance to the basement on the rear elevation and a 19th-century two-storey wing that was built as school accommodation.
