Description
6 The Crescent is a terrace house built around 1793, notable for retaining many of its original features. It is part of a pair of terraces that share a common pedimented facade, which was dated 1808, alongside the Wesleyan Chapel built in 1803 by Joseph Medworth as part of the planned circus of the Castle Estate. The building is constructed from local brown brick with a slate roof and side stack. It has three storeys and a basement, featuring two bays. The stone-coped parapet is adorned with painted stone bands at the first and second floors.
On the second floor, there are two twelve-paned recessed hung sash windows set in cambered gauged red brick arches with stone cills. The first and ground floors each have two sixteen-paned windows in similar openings. The left-hand entrance is approached by two steps and features a six-panelled door with a patterned fanlight that includes glazing bars, all within a double recessed round-headed arch of gauged red brick. The rear of the building has sixteen-paned hung sash windows in segmental arches, along with a similar window in the basement.
Inside, the house boasts an original open-string staircase, three original chimney pieces, panelled window cases, and a round-headed arched cupboard. There is also an iron range by F. Ford from Wisbech located in the service basement, accompanied by a contemporary 19th-century chimney piece.
