Description

The steelyard at The Fountain Inn is a device used for weighing wagons, likely originating in the 18th century. It is situated on a yellow gault brick base and is sheltered from the weather by a timber frame and weather-boarded casing topped with a tiled gabled roof. While much of the machinery is probably from the late 19th or 20th century, part of the main arm and post are original. This structure is noted in Alderton & Booker's "Batsford Guide to Industrial Archaeology of East Anglia" and in Pevsner's "Buildings of England," page 459.
