Description
The Fountain Public House is part of the rear range of a 16th-century inn, which was mostly destroyed by a fire in 1900. The building features a timber frame that is cased in yellow gault brick from the early 19th century, with some parts rebuilt around 1900, incorporating the floor frame of the original structure. It has a steeply pitched roof and stands two storeys tall. Inside, the floor frame is made of substantial scantling and displays fine hollow and roll moulding with foliate stops on the main beam. The joists, which also have similar moulding, are laid flat. One room contains early 17th-century square sunken panelling, which has been partly disturbed, along with a fine terracotta Shield of Arms of Torel dated 1583. Below this is a notable late 17th-century bolection moulded fireplace surround.
