Description

The Corner House is a house dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, built on a restricted site. It was extended at the rear in the 18th century. The building is constructed of brick, with part of it rendered and features a chequerboard pattern of brickwork on the right-hand gable end. It has a possibly later parapet and a plain tiled roof that is hipped at an angle, with a shaped end parapet on the right-hand gable end displaying the initials R.M. The house has two storeys and attics, with two later eaves dormers. There are four flush frame hung sashes, each with twelve panes, along with a double fronted shop front and two similar hung sashes at the ground floor. A stair turret is located at the rear angle of the building. The entrance features an early 19th-century pedimented doorcase. The rear range, built in the 18th century, is made of red brick that has been painted and consists of one storey and an attic. It has a plain tiled steeply pitched roof with a sawtooth eaves cornice and a ridge stack. The doorway from Church Lane features an early 19th-century reeded doorcase with decorative boss enrichments at the corners. Inside, the shop and an upstairs room are lined with early 18th-century raised and fielded panelling in two heights, complete with a moulded cornice. The rear range includes plaster boss and cornice mouldings from around 1840. The Corner House is a notable example of commercial premises associated with a south Fenland port.
