Description
High Fen Farmhouse is a house that was originally designed as an open hall with service and parlour ends. In the late 16th century or early 17th century, a stack and floor were added, the roof was rebuilt, and a kitchen was constructed on the north side. During the mid to late 18th century, a parlour range was added to the south. The building features a timber frame on a brick sill and has a steeply pitched roof that was originally covered with reed thatch but is now topped with corrugated iron. It has a ridge stack and follows a lobby entry plan that replaced the original cross-passage. The house has one storey and an attic, with one gabled dormer that is likely from the 19th century. There are two casement windows and a door, all dating from the 19th or 20th century. The kitchen wing, built in the 17th century, is timber framed and open to the roof. The 18th-century wing is likely made of painted brick and features an end parapet and an end stack. Inside, the original roof was constructed with crown-posts, which were removed in the 17th century and replaced with a clasped side purlin construction, although several sooted rafters from the original roof remain. Little of the wall framing is visible. In the 18th-century addition, there are two original cupboards with raised and fielded panels and shaped shelving.
